3:48 am - Dead or Alive?

Alright, as the last post in this journal was spam, and the one before that dating back two year, I have the sneaky suspicion that this community is dead.
However, if there is the slightest chance of it's life, I would love to be a part of it. I am a passionate high school student who is studying French aggresively.
This summer I'll be doing a French exchange, and in preparation, I'm looking around online for good websites.
So, if you're out there, please comment!
I would love to see this community exist.
Bon nuit.

4:31 am - French books

After buying HarperCollins Robert Unabridged French Dictionary (the ultimate bilingual dictionary), I want to know what is...

1) the best French Grammar book. My teacher told me that Schaum's Outline of French grammar is good, but I want to know if there is a better option. I am not familiar with Le Bon Usage and Langenscheidt Pocket French Grammar, so I need information about those books too.

2) the most concise (but complete) conjugation book. There are so many conjugation books out there, but I don't know which one to buy. I cannot find Bescherelle here (by the way, what's the difference between their « La Conjugaison pour tous » and « L'art de conjuguer » ? are they the same book?). My next option might be the "501 French Verbs".

N.B.: bilingue, monolingue, ça m'est egal

I am new here an just starting to learn French. I have a small piece of written work due in this week and although I think it is okay I would really appreciate it if someone was alble to check it for me to make sure I have not made too many mistakes.

Here it is :

I very much appreciate any suggestions anyone has to make about the above text.

Many thanks!

Hey! I'm hoping for someone to proofread my work, or give me any suggestions. They are all appreciated. Though it is likely to have a lot of mistake, because I'm still new to the French language.

Une personne três importante a moi est ma meilleur ami don le Hamilton. Elle s’appelle Kelly. Dissemblable mon autre amies, je n’ai lui pas aime quand je vu lui ton premier moment. [Unlike my other friends, I did not like her when we first met] C’est mon dueseum dies don ma nouver ecole, en grade 8. Je suis trop nerveux, parce que je ne reconnaitré pas quelqu’un. J’ai vu Kelly et j'ai parlé don un petit voix “bonjour”. Mais elle a parlé quelque chose rude (I can’t find the word that’s close to “mean”. Because rude doesn’t fit what I want to say exactly).

I hope my writing in french isn't that bad, so at least you guys can understand it. I also added english to somepart to clear up, just in case. Well, thanks in advance!!!

8:43 pm - Ainsi je pensais

So I want to start reading French literature. I'm in AP now & am doing OK in the class, but I want to fall in love with the language on my own. What books do you recommend? Please don't say something like a Jules Verne classic. I'm talking good fiction.

If there are any authors like Meg Cabot, Sara Dessen, Cecily von Ziegesar, Arthur Nersessian, etc, in the French languaeg, I'd like to read THEIR books.

Thanks a lot guys!

Au revoir.. :)

What's a good way to say "full of pain" in French? Would it be rempli de la peine...or is there a shorter way?

New member! I'm going to be a senior next year, and I finished AP French last year (technically, that was the course title, but only 3 people took the exam. Our teacher was filling in for the regular one and had never taught high school before. She taught college in Haiti, so it was a really great experience, but we learned more about Haitian culture and dictation than grammar...) I spent two weeks in France this summer, one in a homestay in Paris (with a Moroccan family) and one touring the Loire Valley, Normandy, and then Paris again. It was about 105 degrees, humid, and sunny the entire time (unbearable with the lack of air conditioning/window screens). It stormed only once -- the night we ate at the Eiffel Tower (they let us take the service elevator up, so we were the only ones on it).

Anyway, the four of us AP juniors are doing a group independent study next year (advised by our AP teacher). We were thinking of doing a loose discussion/reading group, since we don't technically have to do any work. It's mainly just to fill the gap so we don't lose an entire year of French before college. Has anyone done anything like this before? Any suggestions of what to do/read?

Salut, Je m'appelle Arielle, I'm in French 2 now and will be taking French 3 in High School next year. I just thought I might add a website people might enjoy: http://www.adeater.com/bin/view.cgi?/usr2/internet/www/adeater/welcome2.html,1,ZurlW/MULTI/html/cinema.htmlZ it's a French site with a commercial library from all over the world- but if you select france as the country, you will get tons of commercials from france in French. Some of the commercials are very funny, one or two are in english for some odd reason, but most of them are fun to watch and to try to understand. Let me know if you like it.

Hello. I'm in French 2. I was just hoping to improve my french, so if anybody wants to have a "commenting conversation" avec moi, en francais, then I'd enjoy that. Thanks, I'm just trying to improve my french and my understanding of language in general. Thank You.

6:12 pm - French AP Test

I want to take the French AP exam. My teacher insists on proper pronounciation, grammar, spelling, etc. and makes her classes give oral presentations without notes at least per grading period, so I'd say that I have a shot.

Has anyone here taken the exam? Any pointers? Good books to study/study aides?

How difficult is it? What year of French are you at?

If you could go back before the test, what would you change? What areas would you have spent more time studying?

Thanks, Kelsey
